Wildtracks embraces participatory input from stakeholders in identifying solutions to sustainable development issues. Wildtracks also invests in building community capacity, and provides mentoring for community organizations while building an appreciation for the value of balancing conservation and sustainable development.

At the local level, Wildtracks has been working with Sarteneja—the largest traditional fishing community in Belize—to strengthen community capacity, improve sustainability of the local fishery and promote income diversification.

STRENGTHENING BELIZE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT LINKED TO BIODIVERSITY HEALTH 

At the national level, Wildtracks has provided facilitation of national planning for biodiversity and sustainable development.

  • In 2016, Wildtracks facilitated the development of Belize’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan
  • In 2015, Wildtracks facilitated the production of the Belize Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity, for the Government of Belize
  • In 2015, Wildtracks facilitated the production of the report on the national status of biodiversity, sustainable development and climate change adaptation and mitigation to the Convention on Biological Diversity for the Government of Belize
  • In 2012, as part of a review and rationalization of the National Protected Areas System, Wildtracks assessed the relative contribution of the national protected areas to sustainable development and their importance for building climate change resilience
